Los Lecheros Dairy Club

The purpose of the Los Lecheros Dairy Club is to support the dairy industry through academic and social activities within the dairy science department at California Polytechnic State University.

Membership

The dairy club is open to all majors, but primarily agriculture students. The first meeting held is the second week of fall quarter. Everyone is invited to the dairy for a tri-tip BBQ, and members sign up. Prospective members are notified of the sign-up meeting with signs and banners posted in the Agriculture Building. Dairy Science classes are given a brief speech by the club officers about the club during the first week of fall quarter inviting them to join and giving them a formal welcome. Members are also recruited at the Fremont Hall Club Fair and students living in the dorms are invited to come check out the club. The dairy club prides itself in its members, members tell friends and much of the membership happens by word of mouth. The Lecheros Dairy Club is diverse filled with members whose parents were members of dairy club many years ago, non-ag majors who enjoy the company of dairy club, and a variety of upper and lower class membership.

Members of dairy club are highly active and involved in activities campus wide as well as members of our Dairy Cattle and National Champion Dairy Products Judging Teams. They travel across the nation representing the dairy club and Cal Poly at the American Dairy Science Association Student Affiliate Division, judging contests, and competitive dairy science events across the nation. Much of this travel is covered by fundraisers by the dairy club.


Special Awards

Dairy Club members are very hard working, active, and loyal to their club. If there is an outstanding club member or members who have worked very hard on a committee or event, they are recognized and presented with a small gift at a regular meeting. Aside from being recognized at a regular club meeting a special awards are presented at the Dairy Science Spring Banquet, to be held this year on May 15th. The first award is presented to two dairy club members who have exemplified the qualities of hard work, dedication, and loyalty to the dairy club. These club members have gone above and beyond the call of duty. This prestigious award is called the Milk Bottle Award. The students are presented with a milk bottle and $250.00 each. They are selected by the club advisors and dairy science faculty. It is an honor to receive this award and one of the dairy clubs long living traditions.

Also, at the banquet outstanding seniors are recognized, bestowed their honor, and their names are engraved on the perpetual trophies on display in the herdbook room. Students who judged cattle and products are recognized and an outstanding dairy cattle and dairy products judge for the year are highlighted that evening. Scholarships are presented to dairy science majors, many of which are awarded to dairy club members for their active involvement in Cal Poly dairy science.
