2003-2004 Year-End ReportThe 2003-2004 Dairy Science Student Fee Advisory Committee consisted of: Dan Barbour, Melissa Garcia, Travis Ferreira, Alfred Soares, Jessica Becker, Vance Ahlem, Jennifer Thompson, and Boorus Yim. Faculty advisors were Drs. Stanley Henderson, Leanne Berning and William Gillis. The committee met regularly throughout the academic year to discuss the merits of various proposals and to decide upon the disposition of student-generated funds. It was the goal of the committee to allocate funds to those proposals that would have the most immediate and direct effect on students' educational experience within the area of dairy science. Funds Available for use in 2003-2004The committee had a carry over of $7,307 combined with an additional $70,086 in new funds, for a total of $77,393 allocated for use this academic year. Disposition of FundsThe students elected to make two significant investments this year. The first was the purchase and installation of 13 new computers, construction of a storage closet, and an overhead projector for the dairy computer lab in building 18-1-200. This amounted to apx $30,310. The second was to fund an experimental course in "Commercial Dairy Herd Management Consultation." The cost of this project was ~$10,500 and was really well received by the senior dairy students. As an aid to teaching, several pieces of equipment specific to dairy production were purchased at a cost of $18,000. An additional $3,920 was spent to upgrade three rooms with whiteboards, a printer, and some equipment for use in dairy bowl competition. The committee felt that funding travel for students to attend professional meetings and activities was another high priority for educational enhancement, and approved $7,400 for such activities. An additional $3,000 was used to help offset the cost the annual Department Spring Banquet for the students. Remaining FundsOf the $77,393 available to be spent, $73,130 was spent as previously described, which leaves $4,263 to be held over for next year.
